Collins pulls off what is so difficult for most authors to do: a sequel that is more interesting and more complex than the original. The book explores the world in more detail, especially from the point of view of a victor, and the twist that comes roughly at the middle of the book is well-timed, well-paced and a genuine shock, just when you begin to wonder where this is all going. New characters are introduced and instantly loved. Simply put, this is the best "second act" of a trilogy I've been exposed to since Star wars: The Empire Strikes Back.
